Flannel Bush

The flannel bush, which gets its name from the fuzzy hairs on the flowers and stems, is one of the showiest native plants in California. Their bright, 3-inch, yellow fuzzy flowers proudly stand out in the landscape.

Common flannel bushes are perfectly suited for life in Southern California. Its native range includes central Arizona, most of California and Northern Mexico. Once established, it requires no summer watering, and is found as a low-growing shrub or small tree. Unfortunately, the fuzzy hairs can irritate the skin so placement in the garden is important. Since it is susceptible to root rot if exposed to too much water, it prefers well-drained soil.

Fremontodendron was named after John Charles Fremont, an American military officer, explorer and the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States.
