Romneya coulteri
Matilija Poppy

Sometimes called the fried egg plant or Matilija Poppy, Romneya coulteri is a spectacular native plant that grows along the coast and in the coastal valleys of Southern California. Plants can reach 6 to 8 feet high and flowers can be 9 inches across. Leaves are grayish green and flowers feature delicate crepe-paper petals with large yellow centers.

From late spring through early summer, Matilija display their large, showy flowers. Although sometimes difficult to establish, once Matilija Poppies take hold, they can be invasive. It may be too aggressive for a small garden but the plant is great as a hillside stabilizer. The best way to start new plants is to dig up rooted suckers from spreading roots of a mature plant.

To keep the poppies looking tidy, cut them back to 3-4-inch long stubs in the late fall to early winter; this will also promote flower production.
